Gopinath High School, Nuapada : Where alumni are the change makers

Gopinath High School of Kharia block in Nuapada district has always been at the centre of attention for its seemingly endless discussions around innovation and transformation. Thereafter with the school’s association with Mo School Abhiyan since the academic session 2018-19, the tables have turned. Not only in terms of infrastructural transformation but also the academic sphere of the school witnessed a reformed transition. Currently, running with a students’ strength of 150 in classes from 8 to 10 and 6 teachers, the school has now emerged as one of the classic examples of ‘dreams transforming into realities.’

The then Sarpanch Sri Gopinath Baitharu along with the cordial cooperation of the current headmaster of the school Sri Rabi Shankar Baitharu were the core minds behind the establishment of the legendary school. This privately-run school in the past later transitioned to an aided school. Sri Biswambar Das and Sri Gopinath Baitharu donated 3 acres of land for the construction of the school building in a bid to impart quality education.

The school which gained community support from the very beginning became a role model for others after association with Mo School Abhiyan. The Abhiyan provided further encouragement to the already motivated system. Many of the alumni have come forward to serve their alma mater by their selfless conduct. Notably, alumnus Ms Janaki Meher, a student of +3 Science volunteered to teach science to the students due to the unavailability of science teachers in the school. It should not come as a bolt out of the blue that the school registered a 25% increment in its academic results in the last exam.

The journey of transformation

On the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of the school, the alumni of the school were enlightened about the aims and objectives of Mo School Abhiyan. The school has received ₹10,58,500 as alumni contribution which amounted to ₹31,75,500 after the inclusion of 2X matching grants from the government. Numerous developmental activities have now been undertaken by the school admin with the funds such as the construction of cycle stand, toilets, meeting halls, installation of clean drinking water facilities, procurement of desk and benches for students, science equipment, water taps, beautification of the garden, renovation of classrooms, school main gate, internal pathway and wiring of boundaries. The computer room is now fully equipped with all the required machinery and other related items were set up under Mo School initiative.

Mo School Abhiyan is playing a key role in reuniting alumni with their schools. Through the Abhiyan, many improvements of the school are being made possible by alumni and with the help of community members. It is also creating a healthy environment for imparting education in schools,” said Sri Rabi Shankar Baitharu, H.M. of Gopinath High School. “This campaign reminds us of our duty to the school that built us,” said Sri Nabaghan Das, a former student.
