Malli Lata Das Government Upper Primary School : With alumni’s heart and soul

Founded in 1971 with an objective to educate the local populace, Malli Lata Das Government Upper Primary School at Chandabali block in Bhadrak district was possible due to the zeal and effort of Sri Batakrishna Das. Sri Das provided the financial support and the land required for the construction of the school. Named after his mother Smt. Malli Lata Das, the school received 100% grant-in-aid in the year 1973 and was upgraded to a Govt UP School. The school currently has 348 students enrolled from Class I to VIII with assistance of 10 teachers.

The school has been producing scholars and thus, benefiting the society. Some of the notable alumni names to mention are: Er. Sri Chaitanya Prasad Sahu, Sri Jayant Kumar Sahu, Er. Sri Himarani Bal, Smt. Shashirekha Bal, Sri Sanjit Das and Dr Shubhjit Raul among others. This Mecca of learning has propelled the girls in the area to success and given wings to their dreams.

Malli Lata Das Government Upper Primary School has been associated with Mo School Abhiyan since July, 2018. Sri Laxmidhar Raul, the then headmaster of the school, was instrumental in the process; starting from making the list of the alumni to contacting them and inform the about the goals and objectives of the ‘Abhiyan’, Sri Raul led from the front. His efforts received the reciprocation he wanted and the alumni contributed generously and have been actively participating and monitoring the progress of the school.

Speaking in details, the school has undergone five phases of transformation under ‘Mo School’ initiative: till date, the school has received a financial grant of ₹6,93,800 from the alumni members and ₹13,87,600 from the state government, totalling ₹20,81,400. With this investment, a library and a laboratory were set up for students in the first phase. Safety of the students was a major concern for the school admin as there were no compound walls around the campus. So by utilising the second phase financial contribution, a boundary wall was constructed. In the third phase, a picturesque garden came up in the school premises with a total investment of ₹33,000 and in the fourth phase, a computer room was set up under Mo School initiative.

The computer room was fully equipped with all the required machineries and other related items in the fifth phase. Steel grills were installed too, a water fountain which is now a treat to eyes has come up in the school premises, and a strong gate has also been installed in the school.

Sri Chaitanya Prasad Sahu, a former student of the school and an engineer by profession, has donated ₹ 3,62,000 towards the school’s development under ‘Mo School’. However, contributions are not limited to finance only, the alumni also take care of providing intellectual support to the schoolchildren. For instance, Smt. Sujata Biswal, an alumni, takes classes in the school while another alumni Sri Mithun Das takes care of the electrical works in the school, Sri Buddha Deva and Sri Parameswar Karan have been looking after the infrastructural needs of the school; all have volunteered for their respective tasks.

Sri Bijay Kumar Nayak, the headmaster of the school, is elated to see the kind of response the ‘Abhiyan’ has garnered. He firmly believes that the school will better in every parameter be it infra or academics or co-curricular activities. Alumnus of the school Sri Mithun Das said, “We are reliving our school days. Thanks to Mo School that we are getting a chance to work for our school which has showered us with so many things.”
